Maronite Bishops urge feuding MPs to attend electoral session

 The influential Council of Maronite Bishops urged feuding MPs Wednesday to attend a Parliament session next week to elect a new president, deeming it a national duty.

The statement, likely to embarrass the Christian opposition MPs of Michel Aoun's Reform and Change bloc, is expected to have little effect on the ground. Politicians from both the majority and the opposition have already ruled out an agreement on the next president by September 25.

"It is the duty of the honorable MPs to attend the election session in order to shoulder their responsibilities toward their country and its citizens," said Bishop Youssef Taouk, reading from the statement at the end of the meeting headed by Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Butros Sfeir. "Refraining in this domain is tantamount to boycotting the homeland."

The Maronite Church issues its statements after a bishops meeting held on the first Wednesday of each month. This month's meeting was postponed because Sfeir was on a visit to the Vatican, during which he met with Pope Benedict XVI and other officials and discussed the presidential issue.

The Church voiced fears among many Lebanese that a failure to elect a successor to President Emile Lahoud would push Lebanon toward civil unrest.

"If the presidential elections were hindered, the country's fate would be grim," it said.

The bishops said this "pessimistic look" at Lebanon has pushed as many as 1 million from different religious backgrounds to leave the country seeking safety or work.

Lebanon has witnessed a string of assassinations and explosions over the last couple of years that claimed the lives of many politicians and civilians. Most of these explosions, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in February 2005 in a massive bomb, were blamed on Syria. Damascus denies involvement.

The deterioration in security, a 10-month-old political crisis and a demonstration in the city's commercial center have crippled the economy and forced many businesses to shut down.

The bishops hoped that the elections would bring in a president who can unite Lebanon, which is deeply divided between the Western-backed majority and the opposition.

"It is hoped that the elections would bring a president who can unite the Lebanese from different groups," the statement said. "And who is experienced in solving political issues and can take his decisions by himself and would work to spread state authority on all citizens."

The statement added that the future president should know that he was elected to serve his country and people's aspirations and not "certain persons" or "that state" without naming the persons or the state.

They warned that "if each Lebanese group thought of setting up an independent homeland ... we would cease to have a homeland."

The bishops devoted a large portion of their statement to the issue of massive emigration due to the prevailing deadlock in Lebanon.

"Several legislators" had recently sought safety in other countries, though temporarily, to avoid assassination," the statement said.

وطنية- 7/11/2007(سياسة) كرر مجلس المطارنة الموارنة في بيان اصدره بعد اجتماعه الشهري اليوم, برئاسة البطريرك الماروني الكاردينال مار نصرالله بطرس صفير الدعوة وبالحاح الى " تغليب روح الوفاق حتى يتم الاستحقاق الرئاسي في حينه بحسب الدستور اللبناني", ورأى "ان اصرار المعارضة والموالاة على موقفهما يضع البلد بأكمله في مازق كبير، وشلل تام، وهذا من شأنه ان يعطل ليس النظام الديموقراطي الذي يتميز به لبنان وحسب، بل ان يودي بلبنان الى تفكك لم يسبق ان واجهه من قبل".

وصدر بعد الاجتماع البيان التالي :"اجتمع اصحاب السيادة المطارنة الموارنة في بكركي اليوم برئاسة صاحب الغبطة والنيافة البطريرك الكاردينال مار نصرالله بطرس صفير الكلي الطوبى، وتداولوا في شؤون كنسية ووطنية, وفي نهاية الاجتماع اصدروا بيانا تلاه امين سر البطريركية المونسنيور يوسف طوق وجاء فيه:

1- ان الوضع العام الذي يتخبط فيه لبنان لا يدعو الى راحة البال، وبخاصة الاستحقاق الرئاسي الذي ينتظره اللبنانيون وايديهم على قلوبهم لشدة ما بينهم من تجاذب بين جماعتي الموالاة والمعارضة. لذلك نكرر دعوتنا وبإلحاح الى تغليب روح الوفاق حتى يتم الاستحقاق في حينه بحسب الدستور اللبناني.

2- ان اصرار كلتا الجماعتين على موقفها يضع البلد بأكمله في مازق كبير، وشلل تام، وهذا من شأنه ان يعطل ليس النظام الديموقراطي الذي يتميز به لبنان وحسب، بل ان يودي بلبنان الى تفكك لم يسبق ان واجهه من قبل، وهذا مسؤول عنه، سواء الفريق الذي يتفرد ام الفريق الذي يقاطع عملية الانتخاب. وبعد، فالمسؤولية الاخيرة تقع على مجلس النواب، وهي مسؤولية تاريخية امام الله والضمير والوطن.

3- ان هذا الجو من القلق الذي يسود البلد حمل العديد من اللبنانيين، وبخاصة الشباب والفتيات من بينهم، وهم زبدة المجتمع اللبناني، الى الهجرة القريبة في البلدان العربية، ولكنها لا تلبث ان تصبح هجرة بعيدة تحملهم الى الولايات المتحدة وكندا واوستراليا، وهذا من شأنه ان يفرغ البلد من سكانه، سنة بعد سنة.

4- ان عامة الشعب في لبنان كفر بأهل السياسة. واصبح جل ما يهمه خبزه اليومي ورواتب ابنائه الدراسية، وهمومه اليومية بفعل موجة الغلاء المستفحلة وانتفاء فرص العمل والشلل الاقتصادي.

5- ان "السجن" الذي اجبر بعض النواب على الاقامة فيه، ولو فندق فنيسيا ذا الخمس نجوم، وهم في حالة خوف واضطراب ناهيك عن الذين لجأوا الى الاقامة خارج لبنان، كل هذا يدل على مدى التدهور الذي اصاب لبنان، والذي يجب الخروج منه في اقرب وقت، اذ اردنا ان نبقي على هذا البلد ونستعيد ماضيه الزاهر.

6- اما وقد بلغت الازمة ذروتها ، فيجب ان نوجه انظارنا الى السماء، بخاصة في هذه الفترة الفاصلة بيننا وبين الموعد الاخير للانتخاب الرئاسي، لنسأل الله بصلاة حارة ان ينير سبلنا وسبل ذوي الارادات الطيبة الى ما يجب ان نسلكه من طريق يفضي بنا الى خلاص مامول".
