Maronite bishops warn of 'chaos' if parliamentary elections are delayed

BEIRUT: Maronite bishops warned on Wednesday of the growing divisions between Lebanon's political factions, saying obstruction of the 2009 parliamentary elections would create "chaos" and calling for national unity. Following their monthly meeting in Bkirki headed by Patriarch Butros Nasrallah Sfeir, the bishops issued a statement criticizing the "voices saying that the prevailing political situation does not encourage the holding of the parliamentary elections on schedule." Any attempt to obstruct the elections, said the bishops, would lead the country into chaos.

The bishops added that Lebanon's current political circumstances indicated "a split in opinions that would have a negative effect on daily life" and create unwanted tension. "Our duty is to commit to the overall national interests," read the statement. The bishops urged Lebanon's bickering politicians to unite for the sake of their country, saying that political differences were growing.

The current global economic crisis would force hundreds of Lebanese working abroad to return home, said the statement, which would create difficult living conditions in the country. "We should consider a number of follow-up measures to face this danger," the bishops said, but refrained from making any suggestions in that regard.

Speaking after the meeting, Monsignor Youssef Tawk said that because of the differences between politicians, it was especially important for Lebanese citizens to stick to national interests and principles. "The Lebanese must forget their disputes and unite to avoid more division in their country," said Tawk. Such divisions would only lead to poverty, he added.

The bishops also extended their best wishes to their Muslims celebrating Eid al-Adha on Monday and to the Christians for Christmas.

وطنية- 3/12/2008 (سياسة) عقد المطارنة الموارنة اجتماعهم الشهري، برئاسة البطريرك الكاردينال مار نصرالله بطرس صفير. وفي نهاية الاجتماع اصدروا بيانا تلاه امين سر البطريركية المونسينيور يوسف طوق جاء فيه:
1 - ان الوضع العام في لبنان يشير الى انقسام في الرأي من شأنه ان ينعكس سلبا على الحياة العامة، ويزيد في البلبلة التي بتنا نلحظها في مختلف قطاعات الحياة، ما يقتضي التمسك بالثوابت الوطنية والمصلحة العامة مهما تباينت الآراء والخيارات.

2- ان الازمة الاقتصادية التي جاءت نتيجة الازمة المالية التي اجتاحت العالم ستجبر المئات من اللبنانيين الذين يعملون في المنطقة خارج لبنان على الانكفاء والعودةاليه. وهذا ما سيزيد الضائقة المعيشية تأزما، الأمر الذي يستوجب متابعة التدابير الحكيمة والمبادرات الآيلة الى مواجهة هذا الخطر.

3- ان التباعد الذي نلحظه بين الفئات السياسية في لبنان يتسع بدلا من ان ينحسر. وهذا ما يوجب على أهل السياسة أن يجمعوا رأيهم لانهاض البلد مما يتخبط فيه من ازمات متلاحقة.

4- هناك أصوات ترتفع بين الحين والحين لتقول إن الاحوال السياسية السائدة في البلد لن تشجع على إجراء انتخابات نيابية في موعدها. وهذا ليس بمؤشر خير، وكل تشويش على الانتخابات في البلد يقود الى فوضى، لبنان في غنى عنه.

5 - إن لبنان يقع في منطقة أقل ما يقال فيها إنها مضطربة. وينعكس هذا الاضطراب على أجوائه، وأقل ما هو مطلوب من اللبنانيين تناسي خلافاتهم وشبك أيديهم وتوحيد رؤيتهم لتجنيب بلدهم المزيد من التشرذم، وبالتالي المزيد من الضياع الذي ينعكس فقرا، خاصة على الطبقات المعوزة.

6 - اننا نهنىء اخواننا المسلمين في عيد الأضحى المبارك وأبناءنا في عيدي ميلاد الرب يسوع بالجسد ورأس السنة الميلادية. وبهذه المناسبة، يجدر بالمؤمنين أن يرفعوا عقولهم الى الله ليشكروه على نعمه وبركاته، ويشدوا أواصر التضامن في ما بينهم، فيبادر الميسور إلى مد يد المعونة الى المعسور، ويضعوا موضع العمل قول الرب : " الكبير فيكم فليكن لكم خادما".
