على قدم وساق Maronite leaders lament conduct
in campaigns The Maronite Bishops' Council, following its monthly meeting in Dimane on Wednesday, called for a spirit of consensus and accord to prevail during by-elections which they said should proceed in accordance with constitutional rules and accepted practice.
The Bishops' Council was chaired by Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Butros Sfeir, who has been meeting politicians from both sides of the political divide in the hopes of staving off an electoral battle in Metn that could further fracture the Christian political scene.
The statement said the general mood prevailing in the country and the winds of division that were sweeping across all parties and factions did not bode well for the future. The Bishops' Council also pointed out the migration of the productive, educated youth of the country, saying the exodus further impoverished a nation already languishing under a huge burden of public debt.
The statement urged the Lebanese to reject division and conflict, so that calm - as well as tourists - could return to the country.
